  • What’s Open in Boston on Memorial Day 2013

    Here's a run-down of what's open and what's closed in Boston and the MBTA schedules for Memorial Day – Monday, May 27, 2013. We have the information you need on parking, street cleaning, trash, and other happenings this weekend.

    Include a visit to the swans at the Boston Public Garden over the weekend!

    Restaurants, bars: Open

    Convenience stores: Open

    Supermarkets: Open

    Retail stores: Are allowed to open if the owners choose

    Liquor stores: Closed (See this page from the Secretary of State)

    City, Town, State, and Federal offices and facilities are closed: This includes Schools, Libraries and the Postal Service (express mail will be delivered). Only emergency services are available.

    Financial Services: As the British would say, this is a Bank Holiday with both Banks and the stock markets in the United State closed. Some international markets are open.

    Boston Parking: You don't have to feed the meters. Other parking rules apply. The Tow Lot is CLOSED Saturday 5/25 1PM – Tuesday 5/28 7AM.

    Street Sweeping: The city site says: "Daytime street sweeping is suspended on city holidays, but nighttime sweeping schedules remain in effect. Constituents are advised to call 617-635-4500 for exact details."

    Update from the Boston Transportation Department 05.24.13 : There are two traffic advisories in effect for this weekend

    Boston Trash Collection: The announcement from Public Works states:

    "Monday May 27, 2013

    No Delay of trash or recycling collection in Back Bay, Bay Village, Beacon Hill, Charlestown, Chinatown, Fenway, Leather District, Mission Hill, North End, Roxbury, South Boston, and the South End

    Delay trash and recycling collection a day only if you live in Allston, Brighton, Dorchester, East Boston, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain*, Mattapan, Roslindale, or West Roxbury."

    • Subways will operate on a Sunday schedule
    • Buses will run on a Sunday schedule with some exceptions shown on the link or download above
    • Hingham & Qunicy Ferries will operate on a weekday schedule

    • Commuter Rail will run on a Sunday Schedule with no service for Fairmount, Greenbush, Kingston/Plymouth, and Needham lines
    • Those who use THE RIDE should call the service directly about Memorial Day.

  • Made by Hand: Exceptional Work from the North Bennet Street School

    "Made by Hand: a celebration of exceptional work from the North Bennet Street School" includes dozens of one-of-a-kind objects created by the school's students and alumni – from elegant furniture and musical instruments to exquisite jewelry and ornate hand-bound books.

    This corner cabinet and table were handcrafted by student Paul Whitehead as part of his training in cabinet and furniture making. It is made of black walnut, redwood burl, and holly.  $3,800

    The show is open to the public weekdays from Monday, May 13 through Friday May 24, from 8:00am to 5:00pm, in the main lobby of Two International Place, a soaring office tower overlooking the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Admission is free.

    After graduating from the North Bennet Street School's jewelry making program in 2005, Ilah Cibis set to work crafting beautiful pieces like this charm necklace she named Splash.  $1,000

    One of the country's oldest schools for traditional crafts training, North Bennet Street School has taught career-oriented trade skills since 1885. The nonprofit school is known internationally for excellence in teaching and for its role in promoting and preserving traditional craftsmanship.

    Grecian Yuzenzo is a decorative panel of stained glass and lead made by North Bennet Street School graduate Kate Gakenheimer, whose original training was in preservation carpentry.  $2,300

    The school provides full-time programs and workshops in violin making and repair, bookbinding, cabinet and furniture making, carpentry, preservation carpentry, locksmithing and security technology, jewelry making and repair, and piano technology.

    Penny was out very early one morning when she captured this shot of a cardinal singing at the top of a tree. Our caption for the front page read:

    Sweet Sound of Spring

    "This Northern Cardinal sang long and loud from a Back Bay tree top. His song is a way to attract a mate and declare this territory as his. The redder the cardinal, the more attractive he is to mates because it’s a sign of a male who has found a good food supply."

    You can read some of the stories at the newspaper's website www.backbaysun.com and download a copy of the paper by clicking on the "Full Print Edition" icon in the left hand column. The new issue is usually on the website by Wednesday of each week. Since that icon only lasts until the next paper is published, we have uploaded a copy to this link, so that you can find it anytime.

    In this earlier post is a list of the other places where you can find copies of this local paper. We usually get ours in the Circulation Room at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square.   • Painting the Town: Fresh Paint Event from the Copley Society

    Once a year, the Copley Society sends its artist members across the city to capture Boston at that moment in time. The event is called Fresh Paint. The works produced are sold a week later at a gala auction to benefit the organization.

    They say: "The Copley Society of Art, Co|So, is the oldest non-profit art association in the United States, with a history dating back to 1879. We currently represent over 500 living artist members, ranging in experience from students to nationally-recognized artists and in style from traditional and academic realists to contemporary and abstract painters, photographers, and sculptors."

    We Say: This is one of our favorite walks of the year. It's free, you pick your route, you get to meet and chat with talented people, and you can even take your dog along. And, the Co|So gallery on Newbury Street is always worth a visit. Drop by before the weekend, pick up a map, gather some friends, and enjoy this uniquely Boston experience.

    In the photo above from last year, artist Hilary Baldwin had a perfect day to paint a scene of the Public Garden and the Back Bay beyond.

  • Painting the Town: Fresh Paint Event from the Copley Society

    Once a year, the Copley Society sends its artist members across the city to capture Boston at that moment in time. The event is called Fresh Paint. The works produced are sold a week later at a gala auction to benefit the organization.
