  • Bring a Big Wedge of a Great Cheese to the Party

Instead of putting together a typical cheese tray for your contribution to a holiday gathering or for guests in your own home, why not buy a nice, big wedge of some truly wonderful cheese and bring that. It should be a special cheese – one that is always the first to disappear on any cheese display. We have three to suggest.

What brought this to mind was a conversation with Ed. We were enjoying a cheese tray with both Cypress Grove Truffle Tremor and Rogue River Blue on it when Ed said, "Wow, I remember how much I like these cheeses, we should share those posts again."

    Here they are!

First up is Cypress Grove Truffle Tremor Cheese. Invest in a big wedge in great condition and let the cheese fans know that those little black flecks are bits of truffle in the same cheese paste as the company's ledgendary Humboldt Fog, and it will be the first cheese missing from the table.

Here's  our post  with more details from 2008 Cypress Grove Truffle Tremor Cheese. And, it's still a favorite today.

Next is Rogue River Blue. This is another one we've been talking about since 2008. And, this is only around for a limited time so buy it when you see it. We found the piece above at Whole Foods at the Charles RIver Plaza in Beacon Hill.

Here's our first post on it, Rogue River Blue.

And here's a second when it won a major award,

Rogue River Blue, American Cheese Society Winner

    6a00e54fc42bb88834010536c463b8970c-800wi

The third cheese we're tossing into this mix is Cabot Clothbound Cheddar. While the first two are American West Coast cheeses, Cabot's superstar is from Vermont. This photo (courtesy of Cabot Creamery) shows how wonderful a single cheese can look on a holiday table.

Here's our post on how we discovered this cheese at L'Espalier back in 2009.

Cabot Clothbound Cheddar – Good Neighbors are Wonderful

Since this is a cheddar, it will be more familar to many of the people at most events. And, this is great cheddar with a crumbly texture and great, deep flavor.

Be the hit of the party by bringing something you love and sharing it with friends and family. Here are some really great tips on serving cheese to a crowd from thekitchn.com.

  • Toasting a Sparkling December!

Long ago, we decided that we weren’t waiting for New Years Eve to raise a glass of sparkling wine and toast a happy ending and new beginning. So we’ve started each month with a bottle of bubbles since 2007!  And, we’ve been sharing our bubbly selections with BostonZest readers since New Years Eve 2009.

    6a00e54fc42bb88834017d3c67a7f8970c-800wi

That means we have amassed quite a collection of wine recommendations. They are all available any time you want them from the “Sparkling Wine & More” tab at the top of each page.

With a month of gift buying, parties, and holidays in front of us, we’ll say “Happy New Month,” sip a glass of Nino Franco Rustico Prosecco, and link you to a few bottles you might add to your holiday shopping list.

    A Case of Sparkle

Ordering a case of a good, inexpensive, sparkling wine can be a great idea this time of year. Many shops will give you a case discount. If the store does not promote it, ask. You can also call ahead and have the wine merchant bring in the extra case of the wine you want.

    6a00e54fc42bb88834016761614856970b-800wi

We can suggest Dibon Cava, Gloria Ferrer Blanc de Noirs, or the Nino Franco Rustico Prosecco we’re opening this month.

Pre-wrap a few bottles and you will be prepared for hostess gifts, thank you gifts, client gifts, or something special to hand out with a holiday cash tip.

    Gift Wines For Wine Lovers

For someone who loves wine and would like to try something that will expand their wine life list or add a new category of taste to their holdiay, we would splurge on a “Grower Champagne.”

Central Bottle in Central Square Cambridge always seems to have a supply of these special bottles on hand. We recommend both the Champagne Chartogne-Taillet and Pierre Peters shown from ledgendary importer and wine educator Terry Theise. His annual catalogs are available online and provide a champagne education.

    6a00e54fc42bb88834016300761f28970d-800wi

    Pink for Romance!

Wrap up a romantic evening with the gift of a pink sparkler. It can be a value priced Louis Bouillot Rosé cremant. Or a splurge with a bottle of Delamotte Brut Rose from the maker of Salon Champagne.

Other pinks that tickle our fancy are Argyle Brut Rosé from Oregon, 3B Sparkling Rosé from Portuguese winemaker Filipa Pato, and for the utlimate fun evening try opening a bottle of Puro Rosé! (We had to make a video to show you how to open this one.)

Please add to our list by telling us about your favorite sparkling wine for the holidays. You can add a comment at the bottom of this post, sent it to @bostonzest on twitter or send us an email.

  • Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Dining in Boston 2012

UPDATE: Where to Dine on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2015 in Boston

Where can you dine on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in the Boston area? There are a few great choices! But, if you're planning to dine at one of Boston's fine restaurants over the holidays, make a reservation!

    IStock_000011357895xmas

Don't be surprised if a deposit is required to hold your reservation or if there are special menus and seatings for these special holiday meals.

    What's open on Christmas Eve?

There are more choices on Christmas Eve than on Christmas Day. Some of our favorite, special places have wonderful holiday meals planned for those who reserve for the 24th.

    • The legendary team from L'Espalier and Sel de la Terre offer the option of two different prix fixe Christmas Eve menus.
    • La Morra in Brookline is an ideal spot to meet friends or family from that side of the Boston area. They are offering family style dining, "sharing traditional dishes of Piedmonte."

At the early date of this posting, some places have not announced their traditional Feast of the Seven Fishes events for Chistmas Eve. Check back or follow us on Twitter for updates on this fun holiday dining option.

What Boston Area Restaurants are Open on Christmas?

Hotel restaurants, since they must serve the hotel's guests, are normally open on holidays.

In Boston, hotel restaurants open both the 24th and 25th include some excellent choices:

Other places open on holidays would include chains like Legal Seafoods and many restaurants in Chinatown. We once asked a long time Boston cabbie where we could get something we needed on Christmas, and he said Chinatown was the place to go.

Here are some conversations on Chowhound.com  and Trip Advisor about Christmas dining. We'll add more as we see them.

What Chinese Restaurants are Open On Christmas Day– (update 12.14.12)

    Christmas Day Brunch (update 12.15.12)

Open on Cape Cod on Christmas Day Just in case you are going there, (update 12.15.12)

Xmas Lunch in Boston  (update 12.15.12)

Restaurant open Christmas Day in Newton or nearby (update 12.17.12)

    Other resources:

The reservation site, Open Table has a feature list of its member restaurants with Christmas Eve Specials and Christmas Day Dining.

But, you can also input information on the reservation you want and come up with a list of restaurants open at that hour. Change the hour and the list will change and some are not on the featured lists. It's a good place to start.

Update: 11/28/12 – The Boston Chefs site has posted a list of its participating member restaurants with special features for the holidays. Here's the Christmas Eve List & the Christmas Day list.

Update: 12/21/12 – Eater Boston has posted their list of Where to Eat on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

They have many good choices to add to your holiday options. We'd particularly like to recommend:

Island Creek Oyster Bar for Christmas Eve. It's one of our favorite places and I can just imagine what a happy scene it will be on that evening.

Eastern Standard: They will be open Christmas Day for breakfast and then for a special 3-course prix fixe meal.

Market by John-Georges: They will have a la carte items from their regular menu in addition to a special holiday menu on Christmas Day.

Market by John-Georges: They will have a la carte items from their regular menu in addition to a special holiday menu on Christmas Day.

  • My Silly, Little 4th Burner Multi – Pot Scores Again!

A while back, I bought a Kuhn Rikon 4th Burner Multi – Pot thinking I would use it when a big meal was crowding my small cooktop. It quickly found a place in this cook’s heart and I wrote about, Loving this Odd Little Cooking Pot. Since then I keep finding more instances when it scores as the perfect answer to a kitchen chore.

For Thanksgiving, it worked well at its trick of fitting on a crowded stovetop. It’s seen here ready to cook rutabagas. Even with my giant roasting pan on the stovetop, it stood its ground. I often fit a 12-inch skillet in front of it.

But, before it reached that point in its turkey day to-do list, it had already joined up with a China Cap Chinoise Strainer to strain turkey broth. And, post rutabagas this combo was used to strain the gravy.

I’m nominating this as the perfect holiday gift for someone who cooks for one or two people, someone who has a tiny kitchen like mine, or anyone who will make good use of this true multi-tasker.
