  • Seagull Philosophy: “Why Steal One When You Can Steal…”

"Why steal one piece when you can steal the whole box? They even bagged it for me."

    Here's how the story unfolded.

  • At the Market Report: What’s for Sale at Early Spring Farmers’ Markets

Thanks to winter markets, wholesale customers, farm stands, and CSA's, we are seeing more ready to eat produce at early spring farmers' market. Here are some of what we saw at the Copley Farmers' Market during the past two weeks.

Here's what we bought on opening day at Copley this year. On Friday, we arrived too late for tomatoes and cucumbers from Atlas Farm. They were sold out before we arrived. With early spring markets, it's good to arrive at opening if you're hoping for scare crops like those.

Starters, Annuals, and Herb Plants, too!

The brand new Fastachi shop at 83 Charles Street is filled with bins of nuts, gift packages, nut butters, and all the wonderful sweet and fruity gourmet goodies we've grown to love at their farmers' market stands and their original Watertown shop.

Back in 1965, this address was the home of Ski Hut as you can see in this photo from the City of Boston Archives.

When Penny found this photo, the Beacon Hill Fastachi was just in the planning phase. She saved it to share with fans of this fabulous, family business when the shop finally opened.

Today, 83 Charles Street is a must-see stop. Drop by when you need a gift, to stock up on healthy snacks for home, or to pick up a scoop of freshly roasted nuts to take on your walk through the Boston Common, Public Garden, or the Charles River Esplanade.

  • At The Market: Strawberry Season!

     CHE_8116 - Version 22013-06-18-bz-shopping-copley-bob-oppenheim-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

The scent of strawberries is in the air at local farmers' markets, this week, and shoppers all seem to have a basket or two or three among their selections. We captured our friend Bob Oppenheim buying his berrys at the Atlas Farm Stand during Tuesday's Copley Square market.

    DSC_5524 - Version 22013-06-19-Copley-square-framers-market-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

We purchased these beauties from Hamiltion Orchards. Is it possible for berries to have terroir? Whatever the secret, Barbara Hamilton and her crew grow some delicious berries. We ask her every market when her blueberries will be coming.

If pick-your-own is on your agenda, you can start checking your favorite places to see if they've opened their strawberry fields for the season.

    CHE_8121 - Version 22013-06-18-Copley-square-framers-market-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

The big displays of garden plants are slowly being replaced with harvested greens and vegetables. If you are thinking of adding some herbs to your life, this is the time to buy the plants.

    CHE_8090 - Version 22013-06-18-Copley-square-framers-market-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

    In Season, Right Now!

Strawberries, hakurei turnips, fennel, broccoli, mushrooms, garlic scrapes, salad mix, lettuce, arugula, radishes, beets, scallions, kolrabi, rhubarb, bok choi, chard, small onions with green tops, snap peas, sweet peas, herbs, hot house tomatoes, and honey. Plus, you'll find annuals, herbs, and vegetable plants.

    Get Some Before It's Gone!

Green garlic, garlic scrapes, pea tendrils – many farms will stop bring plants to market when they have enough produce to fill their stands.

    Coming Soon!

After strawberry season comes blueberry season. I start looking for the first blues about July 4th.

Follow all our Local Food/Farmers' Markets and At The Market reports:

We heard talk about some early hothouse tomatoes. Curtis Stillman said Stillman's Farm would soon have kale and their first peas.

  • Great Small Shops Around Boston: A Great Trip Advisor Conversation

Recently, a visitor coming to Boston from Texas asked the community over on Trip Advisor's Boston Forum for some suggestions for "Small or Unique Shops With Gifts or Jewelry." I'm making that conversation our "Friday Link," today.

    6a00e54fc42bb888340154373f5a56970c-800wi
The Society of Arts & Crafts on Newbury Street was one of my suggestions.

We would love to hear about the small, independent places you shop for special gifts. Add a comment here or, if you're shy about comments, send us an email and we'll add your thoughts as an update to this post.

    6a00e54fc42bb8883401543689cb0d970c-400wi
We also love the gallery at the North Bennet Street School.

People coming to Boston turn to the local Trip Advisor community to answer all kinds of questions. The best part about joining conversations like this is that I always learn a lot. And, I can share some of the most informative discussions with our BostonZest readers.

Click over to the original conversation and you'll find a great list of places from a wonderful group of Boston locals and frequent visitors!
