Classic “Art” Gone Punk

The classical statue representing art outside the Boston Public Library took on a punk look for a few days.

This work was created by Boston sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, who was a teacher at the School of the Museum of Fine Art. When his mentor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, could not complete the commissioned artwork for this area, Pratt was selected to create two statues representing Art and Science.

Here's a photo of a model for the statue from the Boston Public Library Collection. (Used under this creative commons license.) I wondered if those two lamps were ever part of the finished work and checked through photographs on file from the time the libary was completed. They never appear.

Shop Description: Calm and soothing. You can see the thought that was put into designing the shop. What you may not see is that it is also very green– environmentally responsible that is! Here are the details about that aspect of this store.

People: Christopher and Rayna Carbone are the owners. Christopher (above) is a Certified Specialist of Wine. But, more important than the letters after his name is his ability to communicate his love of the wines he stocks to customers with any level of wine knowledge. He asks the right questions, tries to figure out what you like, what food you are matching, offers tastes, and refines his recommendations from there.

What makes this shop special: A very warm welcome. Great wine knowledge. A carefully curated selection. Plus, a great location right off the Green Line in Coolidge Corner. You know you'll be going there soon, for something, so stop by and explore this new shop while you're there.

They say: "We believe in wines that are Real, honestly made, in the most Natural way. We Say: Our first visit was like walking into a room filled with old friends. As we circled the selection, we took turns saying, "Look they carry…." followed by the name of a longtime favorite wine, producer, or importer.

Nice Touch: They have four reds and four whites available for tasting. This allows you to try wines that might be a bit out of your comfort zone and helps guide the staff to offer better recommendations for you.

Regulars say: Richard Auffrey, The Passionate Foodie said, "This is very much a hand sell store where customer service is key. Many of these wines will be unfamiliar to the average consumer, and even the avid wine lover is likely to find plenty of wines they have not tasted before. It is a very intriguing selection of wines, and there were plenty of wines which interested me."

Provincetown “Frenchie” with a Stand-in!

On every Provincetown visit we make a point of checking out some of our favorite gardens. This one, on Commercial Street, had a new addition– a Frenchie sculpture.

Suddenly, the real star emerged from the house, and granted a brief, private photo op!

And, just as abruptly, returned to seclusion, leaving the stand-in to deal with the next admirers!

Thanks for coming out to see us, little Frenchie!

Nature as Sculptor

What do you see in this weathered wooden pile?

On our last two trips to Provincetown, I spent time photographing the details of this group of weathered piles.

I find them fascinating. They change personality with the light, the tides, and the day.

Northeastern, Forsyth and Hemenway: Where to Find Food Trucks

As these rolling restaurants expand their reach and numbers throughout the Boston area, we’re Food Truck Tracking– checking out some of their favorite nesting spots, and what you’ll find when you get there. -The BostonZest Team!

How many trucks: One truck at a time.

Who's here: The schedule calls for Mei Mei Street Kitchen, Roxy's Grilled Cheese, Frozen Hoagies and Boston Speed Dog. (Update: May 3, 2012: Check the latest feeds from these trucks. Steve at Hub Food trucks tells us there have been some changes to the schedule.)

What we had: The opening day of Mei Mei drew us out to this spot. Our lunch was "Beef & Cheese Dumplings," "Porky Mac & Cheese," "Supah Spicy Magic Brownies," and "Crimson Berry Iced Tea."

Hours and dates: So far, some Tuesday through Friday lunch and dinner slots are filled here.

Tips: If you crave shade on a summer afternoon, the open space east of the building where the truck parks is a nice strip of shady grass that everyone seems to use for sitting and walking between streets.

And, if you are visiting the Museum of Fine Arts, a visit to a food truck might be just the break you need in a long day of viewing treasures.

Where to Eat: There are benches up towards the museum, grassy lawns for picnic style dining, stone seating on Forsyth Street and a few tables in front of a Northeastern building on the corner.

Where to eat inside: We'll leave this one to you. Let us know if you have a good idea for a place to dine inside in the winter.

Restrooms: You could check in the Northeastern campus buildings where the public is allowed. If you're a member of the Museum of Fine Arts, you can use your free admission to access their facilities. If you know of a spot or two, add them to the Universal Hub Wicked Good Guide to Boston Restrooms so the rest of us can find them.

Bonus points for: A super friendly crowd of food truck lovers! The line was filled with happy, fun folks.

Dot by Dot: Recent Work by Artist Bob Oppenheim

Tonight, a show of recent work by our friend, Bob Oppenheim opens at the Trustman Art Gallery at Simmons College. This is a great opportuntiy to not only see some of Bob's work but also to add another venue for exploring art to your leisure time list. The gallery exhibits the work of professional artists and has a yearly exhibition of student work.

Don’t Wait for Lilac Sunday, Plan an Arboretum Visit This Week

Walking around the city last weekend, we noticed the scent of lilacs in the air. We enjoyed seeing some wonderful, old bushes at Titus Sparrow Park. And, a recent post by A Proper Bostonian also featured lilacs.

If you look forward to Lilac Sunday at the Arnold Arboretum each year, we suggest you schedule two visits this spring. One this week or weekend to see the lilacs, and one on May 13th to enjoy the events planned for Lilac Sunday– also the only day of the year when you can have a picnic at the Arboretum.

Financial District, Milk & Kilby: Where to Find Food Trucks

Location: Walk across the street to the traffic island at the intersection of Milk & Kilby and order up. (map)

MBTA LINK: Close to State Street, Downtown Crossing, and Aquarium T-Stops.

How many trucks? One or two-at-a-time are scheduled here with different trucks on different days and each day of the week. This spot has trucks Tuesdays through Fridays.

Who's scheduled here? Go Fish!, Cupcakory, Momogoose, Roxy's Grilled Cheese, Kick**s Cupcakes, Froyo Truck, Redbones Barbeque, Bon Me

What we had: Fish & Chips, Miso Seared Salmon Rice Paper Wrap with ginger/wasabi dressed Asian Greens, Radish and sesame shiitake mushrooms and lemonade from Go Fish. For dessert, we shared a Lemon and a Salted Caramel Cupcake from the Cupcakory.

Update: Go Fish is no longer servign up food on the Boston Streets.

Hours and dates: No mornings here. This spot has trucks Tuesdays through Fridays.

Tips: Figure out what side of the hulking advertising sign is the order line and which is the waiting-for-pick up line. We almost cut the line by mistake because we approached from the wrong side.

Where to Eat: The wonderful Norman B. Leventhal Park at Post Office Square is just a block away. As the weather warms, they'll have cushions and books you can borrow at lunch time. And, 12:00 Noon – 2:00 PM, June through August they have a summer music program. There's even free WIFI if you want to surf while you eat.

Three blocks to the East is the Greenway with benchs and some tables and chairs. Beyond that is the HarborWalk.

Where to eat inside! The nearest spot on cold or rainy days is South Station, about half a mile from these trucks.

Restrooms: South Station. And, you can always use Universal Hub's Guide to Boston Restrooms to add a few other places if you know of them.

Bonus points for: Making the best use yet of an unattractive traffic island. Now, if one of the nearby businesses whose employees enjoy this food truck spot would add a bit of greenery and maybe a couple of tables, this could be a pocket park!
