    About Today in Boston: We keep hearing that people miss our cover photos that ran for years in the Back Bay Sun. That assignment was to provide a photo that showed what the week was like in the neighborhood. Often the photos illustrated favorite quotations. Today in Boston is an occasional offering to our BostonZest readers featuring photos along the same theme but taken wherever we happen to be.

  • George Washington with a Feather in His Cap…

    Early this morning, as I made a loop around the Boston Public Garden, it became apparent that something had been added to Thomas Ball's statue of George Washington.

    I didn't remember a feather in his cap. Had someone added one?

    Not one but many feathers and those feathers were moving and watching me.

    Or watching the squirrels and the smaller birds perhaps.

    No one seemed to notice what I was busy photographing with my phone. Perhaps the morning commuters are so used to seeing people with phones out taking pictures of Washington that they don't look to see if anything is different. Today, for a little while, it was.

  • George Washington with a Feather in His Cap…

    This week brought news that the number of homes for sale in Boston is down, while the prices for those homes listed are up.

    It's hard to find a place to hang your hat, but this cowhand has picked a fence on Marlborough Street to stake a claim.

  • Here’s a Peek at a Back Bay Hidden Garden

    Have you ever wondered about those gardens behind the walls along the Back Bay Alleys? We were dinner guests of a friend with a charming walled, English-style garden in the rear of his home.

    Penny has always been a fan of green and white gardens, especially those that are used the most in the evening. This corner is a great example of a charming use of that concept with just a pop or two of color.

    Accessories are fun in a garden. As your eyes move around, you see one interesting object after another.

    Comfortable seating and handy tables added ease to the hospitality.

    A dining table gives options for dinner or for working in a lovely setting.

    Notice the bed of herbs near the door leading to the kitchen.

    We were totally enchanted with these roses that seemed to be growing in bouquets.

    It was so quiet and peaceful that it was easy to forget we were in the heart of the city – until we looked up!

  • When It’s 65 Degrees in July, You Can Play in the Fountain All By Yourself!

    Walking by the Christian Science Center on this cool weekend, we watched this young man enjoy playing in the fountain all alone.

    This plaza is a great spot to hone your photography skills. Normally the area is full of people enjoying a cooling dash through the spray. Yesterday a few spectators sat along the wall and everyone else gave the water a wide berth.

    While there were no food trucks in place on this weekend, it is also one of our favorite food truck destinations.

  • Kilachand Hall, Shelton Hall … 91 Bay State Road, Then and Now

    Today 91 Bay State Road (map) is a Boston University dormitory for Kilachand Honors College students. Since September 2012 it has gone by the name Kilachand Hall. Over the years it has had other names and an interesting history.

    It was opened in 1923 as the Sheraton Apartment Hotel. It was one of the popular "apartment hotels."

    In his book, Built in Boston, architectural historian Douglass Shand-Tucci explained how these differed from commercial hotels, "… apartment hotels did not seek transient guests." He added, "… they were popularly described as the habitats of the 'newly wed and the nearly dead.'"

    BU Today published a story, "One Address, Many Stories: Shelton Hall’s stately, swinging past" on the history of the building in 2012. 

    If you click over and read this article, you'll learn:

    • The Sheraton Hotel chain was named after this building when new owners acquired it in 1939 and unified their holdings under the Sheraton moniker.
    • The rooftop was famous as a place for society entertaining.
    • In 1950 new owners created the name Shelton possibly as a money saving measure.
    • Some say the building is haunted by the spirit of Eugene O'Neill who died on the 4th floor. 
    • BU bought the building in 1954 and renamed it Shelton Hall and used it as a female dormitory.

    When you approach the building from Bay State Road, it's easy to forget that it stands on the banks of the Charles as shown in this postcard.
