Tips for Zipping around in Rental Cars with Your Dog

Poppy is ready to go in the back seat of a Zipcar. Both she and the car are protected.

This is a wonderful time of year to take day trips or weekends away that include your canine pals. I know we love to take Poppy along when we have adventures. But, we also need to keep the rental car or Zipcar clean. And, if you have your own car, these tips will work for you too!

Zipcar is very specific on what they require if you take your dog in one of their vehicles. The rules say,

"Can I take my pet in a Zipcar?

Yes, but only when it's kept in a locked pet carrier. Many members are allergic to pet hair so if any happen to escape the pet carrier, please clean it up before your reservation comes to an end.

Service animals used by disabled members or passengers with disabilities are an exception. These animals are allowed in the car without a pet carrier."

Traditional rental company's each have their own statement on this. We use Budget and here is what they say at the time of this writing.

"Do you permit pets in the rental car?

Answer: Housebroken pets are invited to travel in your rental car, just as they do in your personal car. Although Budget doesn't assess an extra fee for pets, pet owners will incur an additional charge for any damage caused by animals, or any special cleaning required as a result of shedding or accidents."

Poppy Loves Car Rides

Poppy loves going with us for car rides. But, we have had other dogs who suffered from motion sickness and in the past have transported rescue dogs we didn't know well. We learned that a few layers of protection and a couple of precautions were smart.

Protective Enclosure

A crate or pet carrier snugged in place with the car seatbelt will help keep your dog safer in a sudden stop or accident. It will also keep your dog from distracting the driver. We didn't take it on the short trip with Poppy (shown in the photo), but we have a great water cup that clamps on to the crate
and won't spill easily.

Protect the Car

A waterproof mat
under the crate will protect the car from water spills or any other puppy problem. We still add a disposable puppy pad
to the front of the crate from years of traveling with a car sick dog.

Liquor stores: Open

City, Town, State and Federal offices and facilities are closed: This includes Schools, Libraries, and the Postal Service (express mail will be delivered). Only emergency services are available.

Financial Services: As the British would say, this is a Bank Holiday with most Banks closed. But, each year more banks decide to keep a few branches open. Check with your own bank.

Stock market: Open as are international markets.

Boston Parking: City website says, "Free parking at all city meters. All other rules apply.

Street Sweeping: City website says, "Daytime street sweeping is suspended on city holidays, but nighttime sweeping schedules remain in effect."

The MBTA has announced schedules for Columbus Day, Monday, October 14, 2013. The service schedules varied from Saturday, to modified Saturday, and regular weekday, to modified weekday. For a few days before and after the holiday, schedule details will show up at this link.
- Green and Silver lines will run on a weekday schedule.
- Red, Orange and Blue lines are on a Saturday schedule with some buses replacing service on the Red line.
- Buses will run on a Saturday schedule with a list of routes not operating.
- Commuter Rail and Boats will run on a weekday schedule.
- The Ride will run on a Saturday Schedule

Do Not Block Intersection! State Law, $150 Fine

As one of the key alternate routes, traffic coming across the Harvard Bridge (Mass Ave Bridge) onto Massachusetts Avenue in both directions was under careful scrutiny at the start of the Longfellow Bridge Project.

We don't know if the new grid patterns painted on intersections and the addtion of signs to the lights was a direct result of having a police officer on every block. But, these things did happen at the same time.

Obviously, it will take more than signs. It will take enforcement and a few fines to make any progress towards the goal of avoiding gridlock by convincing Boston drivers to obey the law.

That law says, "The driver of a motor vehicle shall not cross or enter an intersection, which it is unable to proceed through, without stopping and thereby blocking vehicles from travelling in a free direction. A green light is no defense to blocking the intersection. The driver must wait another cycle of the signal light, if necessary." Here's a link that that section of the Massachusetts laws.

It is also illegal to stop in any crosswalk:

"…nor shall any such operator enter a marked crosswalk while a pedestrian is crossing or until there is a sufficient space beyond the crosswalk to accommodate the vehicle he is operating, notwithstanding that a traffic control signal may indicate that vehicles may proceed." Here's a link to that section of the Massachusetts laws.

Eye Candy: 1972 Karmann Ghia, “Hey! Over Here!”

As I began to walk past this 1972 Karmann Ghia, I thought I heard, “Hey! Over here!” Eye candy doesn’t always have to come in vivid, eye-arresting colors, but it helps!

There’s no way anyone could’ve walked by this German beauty without at least a glance, or in my case a jaw-dropping stare.

I hadn’t seen one of these spunky little sport cars in years. As a kid, I remember a neighbor having one – his driveway was always full of the latest car models, especially convertibles. Since the drop-top production run (1957-1974) of this Volkswagen ended nearly 40 years ago, it was amazing to see such a pristine example.

The Karmann Ghia was a Beetle underneath with a shapely skin styled by Italian automotive engineer Luigi Segre. The buyer of this new vehicle was treated to a product that took a bit more time and effort to build, and it showed – especially in the steeper sticker price.

As I was busily snapping photos of this beauty on a Boston street, a man asked me, “Is it yours, or are you just an enthusiast?” "Sadly, the latter," I told him.

I guess there was no way to hide my genuine enthusiasm (not that I was trying). After all, I was under the powerful spell of Eye Candy!
