Restaurants, Bars: Open

Convenience Stores: Open

Supermarkets: Open

Retail Stores: Are allowed to open, if the owners choose

Liquor Stores: Open

City, Town, State and Federal offices and facilities are closed: This includes Schools, Libraries, and the Postal Service (express mail will be delivered). Only emergency services are available.

Financial Services: As the British would say, this is a Bank Holiday with both Banks and the Stock Markets in the United States closed. International markets are open.

Boston Parking: You don't have to feed the meters. Other parking rules apply.

Update from the city site 01.18.13: "Tow Lot: The Tow Lot will be closed from 12PM on Saturday to 7AM on Tuesday."

Boston Trash and Recycling:

The City website says,

"Martin Luther King Day, Monday January 21, 2013

No Delay of trash or recycling collection in Back Bay, Bay Village, Beacon Hill, Charlestown, Chinatown, Fenway, Leather District, Mission Hill, North End, Roxbury, South Boston, and the South End.

Delay trash and recycling collection 1 day if you live in Allston, Brighton, Dorchester, East Boston, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain*, Mattapan, Roslindale, or West Roxbury.
*If you live in Jamaica Plain and your trash is picked up 2 times per week, do not delay."

Street Cleaning: The city says, "Daytime street sweeping is suspended on city holidays, but nighttime sweeping schedules remain in effect. Constituents are advised to call 617-635-4500 for exact details."

MBTA Schedule for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 21, 3013

Subway: Blue, Orange, Red, Green line and Silver lines will operate on a Saturday schedule.
Buses and Trackless Trolleys will operate on a Saturday schedule with a list of routes posted here that will not operate.
Commuter rail trains will operate on a regular weekday schedule.
Commuter boat services from Hingham, Hull, and Quincy will operate on regular weekday schedules.
Inner Harbor Ferry Service from Charlestown to Long Wharf will operate on a regular weekday schedule.
The RIDE will operate on a Saturday schedule.

City, Town, State and Federal offices and facilities are closed: This includes Schools, Libraries, and the Postal Service. Only emergency services are available.

Boston Parking: You don't have to feed the meters. Other parking rules apply. The Tow Lot will be open Monday – Friday 7am-10:30 pm, Saturdays 9 am- noon, and it is closed on all city holidays. (We'd recommend calling before going on Christmas Eve.)

Boston Trash Collection: The city says the following about trash collection Christmas week.

"Tuesday, December 25, 7am – Saturday, December 29, 2012, 5pm

City Calendar Event

Monday December 24th regular trash and recycling for all sections of the City.

Tuesday December 25th, no trash or recycling collection in all sections of the City.

Back Bay [Tue-Fri], Fenway, Lower Roxbury, Mission Hill, South End, trash/recycling cancelled on Tuesday December 25th. Next schedule trash day is Friday December 28th.

Back Bay [M-Th], Bay Village, Beacon Hill, Charlestown, Chinatown, Leather District, North End, regular schedule, no delays.

Allston, Brighton, Dorchester, East Boston, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain*, Mattapan, South Boston, West Roxbury, regular schedule on Monday, December 24th, and delayed, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, one day.

*If you live in Jamaica Plain and your trash is picked up 2 times per week, do not delay.

Financial Services: As the British would say, this is a Bank Holiday with both banks and the stock markets in the United State closed. Some international markets are open.

• Blue, Orange, Green, and Red Line trains, buses, and trackless trolleys will operate on a Sunday schedule.

• Many buses will run on a Sunday schedule however there is a long list of buses that will not operate on Christmas day. See those details here.

• Commuter rail trains will operate on a Sunday schedule except for the Fairmount, Greenbush, Kingston/Plymouth, and Needham lines, which will not operate.

• Hingham, Quincy, and Charlestown commuter boat service will not operate.

• THE RIDE will operate on a Sunday schedule.

Street Sweeping: The city says, "Daytime street sweeping is suspended on city holidays, but nighttime sweeping schedules remain in effect. Constituents are advised to call 617-635-4500 for exact details."

Boston Trash Collection: The city says, "Thursday, November 22, 7am – Saturday, November 24, 2012, 5pm "Delay trash and recycling pickup 1 day only if you live in South Boston, Allston, Brighton, Dorchester, East Boston, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain*, Mattapan, Roslindale, or West Roxbury AND your trash and recycling is normally collected on Thursday or Friday. *If you live in Jamaica Plain and your trash is picked up 2 times per week, do not delay."
