  • Truly Boston’s Finest: Police, Fire & EMS Dispatchers Too!

    CHE_6069 - Version 22013-04-21-Boston-police-impact-zone-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Two Boston Police officers stopped to hold a conversation in front of one of the barricades near Copley Square on Sunday. Penny noticed the sign someone had posted that was visible between them, "Truly Boston's Finest."

After years of working in the media, we often follow the operations of Boston's first responders on radio scanners. We listened a lot last week.

We'd like to add the calm, collected, resourceful police, fire, and EMS dispatchers to the city's list of heroes. Their work was impressive during this crisis. We heard thanks and praise for outstanding work, over the radio, from commanding officers. However, this group has not yet been given the public credit they deserve.

Spread the word. We have great dispatchers here in Boston and they are a vital part of the team. Truly Boston's Finest!

  • Mother’s Day Dining 2013, Reserve Now for May 12th!

UPDATE: Mother's Day Dining 2014, Reserve Now for May 11th!

Time to make reservations, if you plan to treat Mom to a meal out on Mother's Day, May 12, 2013.

Keep in mind that this "treat Mom to a great meal day" falls at the beginning of graduation season in Boston with Simmons College, Emmanuel College, Fisher College, Emerson College, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, and Berklee College of Music holding commencements that weekend. (Here's the full list of Spring 2013 Commencement Dates for planning purposes.)

If your budget is tight, take Mom out for breakfast or treat her to breakfast in bed!

For Mother's Day dining ideas, here are two excellent lists of restaurants with special menus and hours for May 12, 2013.

Don't be surprised if some places require a credit card to secure the reservation. This is the type of holiday when people may book multiple restaurants and decide where to go at the last moment. That can make the restaurant turn away other potential customers, so a guarantee may be needed to reserve.

OpenTable always does a great job of guiding you to the right reservation. What's more, you can just click through and reserve from this list.

Boston Chefs has a list of specials for the day from their members.

As more great Boston Food sites publish their recommendations, we'll post updates here! Follow us on Twitter ( @BostonZest ) for notice of those additions!

Update 05.07.13: from the North Shore Dish Team here are places to take Mom North of Boston.

Update 05.10.13: From Grub Street Boston: Grub Guide: Where to Hang Out With Mom If You're Not Into Brunch Buffets

Update 05.10.13: From Lisa DeCanio : Treat Mom to One of These 12 Mother's Day Brunches

    Our picks

For a gathering of family members with different food preferences, it's great to know about a place like Eastern Standard where they can please the cocktail lover, the meat-and-taters brother, and the family epicure.

Sometimes, family meals can use a bit of entertainment mixed in. The Top of the Hub is perfect for this. They'll have prix fixe, 4-course brunch and dinner menus on Mother's Day with live jazz in the lounge for both meals. You'll also receive complementary passes to the Skywalk Observatory above the restaurant on the 50th floor. That will give part of your day a 360 degree view of Boston and the surrounding area.

If Mom is a seafood lover, call now to secure a table at Island Creek Oyster Bar. This Kenmore Square restaurant has established itself as the best fine dining seafood restaurant in Boston. Your family will enjoy the best in seafood in a big, comfortable room with reservations and service that will make Mom feel spoiled.

And, for the best gift, let her choose something from her wish list. Get an Amazon gift card! You can send it by email or print it out to tuck into a greeting card.

  • Early Spring: Henry Thoreau and Climate Change at The Concord Museum

    Early spring concord museum

We have a double Friday Link, today. First is The Garden Club of the Back Bay's blog that keeps us informed about wonderful programs, events, and exhibitions.

This week, they pointed out "Early Spring: Henry Thoreau and Climate Change" which opens this weekend at The Concord Museum.

    The Concord Museum Says:

"Early Spring: Henry Thoreau and Climate Change, a ground-breaking exhibition at the Concord Museum from April 12 through September 15, 2013, explores three centuries of careful observation of seasonal natural phenomena in Concord, a pool of data on the relationship between climate and biology that is essentially without parallel in North America. The exhibition also provides an extraordinary opportunity to examine the Concord Museum’s renowned Thoreau collection that includes the desk on which Thoreau wrote Walden, together with examples of his original field notes, journal recordings, seasonal charts, and botanical specimens. This material has never before been exhibited together."

In additon to putting a visit to this exhibition on your calendar, there are links to ways that you can become part of this ongoing examination of climate change on the exhibition page.

  • Parking Your Car for Boston Marathon Weekend 2013

    IMG_1980 - Version 2

UPDATE: PARKING YOUR CAR FOR BOSTON MARATHON WEEKEND 2015

Now's the time to plan where you'll park for Marathon weekend, so your car doesn't end up on a flatbed! And, be warned, the city does tow every car left in the way of the racers. So, this weekend, when you move your car for street sweeping, think ahead.

If you normally park on the streets along the route of the weekend races, you may want to begin looking for spaces off-the-route. If you can do without your car for a few days, consider stashing it in a safe spot before everyone else has the same idea. And, remember, the bike lanes on Massachusetts Avenue have eliminated more than 70 spaces so finding on-street parking will be more difficult than ever.

Here's a Google map that locates public parking facilities using the Boston Marathon Finish Line as the central point.

And, if you'll need your car on Monday, you should make sure it's on the side of the Marathon route where you can reach it and get to your planned destination.

Here are some transportation restrictions & parking tips for Boston Marathon volunteers from the B.A.A. Site.

    Sunday, April 14, 2013 – The B.A.A. 5K

Again this year, there's a major race on Sunday in addition to Monday's marathon.

Thousands of runners are expected to compete in a 5K (3.1 mile) race one day prior to 117th Boston Marathon. This race will start at 8 AM and cover a route through parts of the Back Bay and Beacon Hill, ending at the traditional Boston Marathon finish line.

Here's a link to the 5K course map on the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) site.

Plus, there are the Invitational Mile races that will also be held on Sunday, April 14, 2013. For details, including streets impacted by this event, go to Invitational Mile 2013.

Street Closures and Parking Restrictions for Marathon Monday, April 15, 2013

Parking restrictions for the Marathon often begin on Boylston Street five or six-days before the event. From this point, until the last runners are safely across the finish line, you'll see more and more "No Parking/No Stopping" signs popping-up along the marathon route and some adjacent streets.

Remember, many streets in the Copley Square area will be impacted by the marathon. The best advice is to park your vehicle and walk and/or take public transportation.

For more information on road closures, here's the City of Boston:

2013 Boston Marathon Weekend – Traffic & Parking Advisory

The City says:  "Patriot’s Day Holiday – Monday April 15, 2013 … Street Cleaning: Overnight sweeping Sunday-Monday morning (weather permitting) still in effect. No Monday daytime posted sweeping. Resumes 12:01AM Tuesday as listed on posted arterials."
