No Mayo Lobster Roll from James Hook & Company

The lines at the Food Truck Throwdown today were way too long so we stopped by James Hook & Co. to grab a cup of chowder. I was looking longingly at the lobster rolls when one of the crew came up and asked if he could get something for me.

I said, "I'd love a lobster roll but I can't have mayo." He said, "Tell me how you'd like it and I'll make what you want." And, he did!

Ed and I each had a toasted bun filled with fresh, chilled lobster topped with just a drizzle of melted butter. Perfection!

This adds one more place where you can get a lobster roll without mayo. What you have is pure lobster pleasure. We'll continue the lobster roll hunt and keep reporting back to you.

Farmers’ Markets Opening Dates Spring 2013

Pull out your calendars and mark the dates when you can go and see our farmers' market friends at their summer spots.

With additional food trucks located nearby, many stands offering lunch items, and the Boston Public Library outdoor seats and courtyard close by, Copley Square is a great place to meet someone for lunch on Tuesdays and Fridays.

But, Officer, I’m Only Parked One Way!

We can just hear the arguments as this motorist contests a parking ticket:

"I wasn't driving on the One Way street, I was only parking on it!"
"I didn't see a One Way sign. Was there a One Way sign?"
"I was only parked One Way!"

Sometimes that too-good-to-be-true parking space requires a slow turn to look at the situation.

Spring Is in Bloom with Gran Sarao Cava Rosé

Now that spring is in full bloom, we’re toasting the arrival of May with a Gran Sarao Cava Rosé! This was an easy choice. Because we’ve been cava fans for years and rosé lovers for as long as I can remember, combining the two just heightens the entire experience.

As you approach this sparkler, your eye is teased by its intense red currant hue. The frothy top from a generous pour draws you closer for the scent of red fruit with a hint of plum and fig preserve. But, even if your description isn’t as precise (and mine seldom is), the joy of this wine is that it’s appealing on many level.

Gran Sarao Cave Rosé not only goes well with food but is also sipable all by itself, and wins our praise for its nice, light 11.5 % alcohol.

The winery has set goals to ensure great quality of the cava they import that include: ageing, family owned company, and disgorged to order.

We’re always impressed by a good bottle of sparkling wine at an attractive price that seems to fit almost any occasion and any glass. Make it a cava rosé and we’re sold.

Which Flowers Are Daffodils, Narcissus, or Jonquils?

Do you find yourself asking, "Is that a narcissus or a daffodil?" Or, "Which ones are jonquils?" We did, so we've hunted down the answers for you.

Actually, they can all be called narcissus or more formally narcissus jonquilla. We found a great set of questions and answers at the American Daffodil Society's website. Please visit their site for a great section of frequently asked questions about these lovely plants that trumpet the arrival of spring.

About jonquils, they say, "In some parts of the country any yellow daffodil is called a jonquil, usually incorrectly. As a rule, but not always, jonquil species and hybrids are characterized by several yellow flowers, strong scent, and rounded foliage. The hybrids are confined to Division 7 and the term "jonquil" should be applied only to daffodils in Division 7 or species in Division 13 known to belong to the jonquil group."

If You Missed the Back Bay Sun Last Week

Friends and neighbors still had a bit of difficulty finding copies of the Back Bay Sun that came out on Tuesday, April 23rd. Many of the places where they usually pick up a copy were locked down for part of the week.

It was a difficult week to decide on what to use as a cover photo. We sent a couple of options to the editors. We're happy they decided to use this photo that Penny took from the photo bridge over the Boston Marathon finish line early in the morning on April 15th. Most of the week, these flags were still in place.

You can read some of the stories at the newspaper's website www.backbaysun.com and download a copy of the paper by clicking on the "Full Print Edition" icon in the left hand column. The new issue is usually on the website by Wednesday of each week. Since that icon only lasts until the next paper is pubished, we have uploaded a copy to this link, so that you can find it anytime.

Here's a list of the places where you can pick up a copy of The Back Bay Sun. We usually get ours in the Circulation Room at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square. There, you'll also find copies of the Beacon Hill Times and the North End Regional Review.
