But, someone forgot to have shared that message with this stream of Newbury Street Shoppers.

Okay gang, go have a hot chocolate at Burdick Chocolate on Clarendon. Dangle a couple of those chocolate mice by the tails as you nibble them, and see if that can put a smile on your faces!

  • Tip for Cleaning Hands Stained & Sticky from Holiday Greenery

Did you know that there's an easy way to get pine pitch and sap from holiday greens off your hands and that it's probably sitting on your baking shelf? Vegetable shortening will do the trick. "You could use butter, but the shortening is cheaper," laughed Francine Crawford from The Garden Club of the Back Bay (GCBB).

After just a couple of hours of wreath making, this Garden Club volunteer's hands were filled with sap. When she's ready to clean up, the club has a container of shortening by the sink. As you can see, "baking sticks" are perfect to keep around for this job.

Scrub those sticky spots with a bit of Crisco (or the less expensive house brand) and you'll save your hands. Then, a bit of dishwashing detergent will wisk away the grease. Francine says they learned this trick from a GCBB speaker a few years ago.

Each year, Ed and I stop into The Garden Club of the Back Bay's "Wreath Week" Workshop to soak up some seasonal spirit and visit with the incredible volunteers who give up days of their time right at the start of the holiday rush to decorate, deliver, and raise funds with hundreds of wreaths. And because the room is full of brilliant people, we always learn a few new things about a wide range of topics.

If you love walking around the wonderful Back Bay neighborhood with all its trees and gardens, you owe a debt of gratitude and support to this organization. You might still be able to purchase a simple wreath with a bow while supplies last. "Sadly, we are unable to accept orders for fully decorated wreaths during wreath making days, but you may put your name on our mailing list for advance notification next season," they posted on their website.

You can also make a direct contribution to the group. The GCBB will add that to the funds they raise on occasions like this and put the money to work on planting, inoculating, tree pruning, and many more projects that you can see at this link.

  • American Chop Suey, a New England Tradition

This is a traditional time of year, so why not make a big pot of this area's American Chop Suey. I like to have old fashioned, comfort food around when life gets busy. This is also a great dish to feed a crowd or to bring to a pot luck.

If you follow the tips you've learned from watching food shows, you can add a note of refinement – a je ne sais quoi – to your version of this hearty dish.

For example, I started this batch with this recipe from Saveur Magazine. I love their addition of crushed, red pepper flakes and cinnamon. Neither one of those was in my family's version.

I used red pepper instead of green. And, after I browned the beef, I used some white wine to deglaze the pan and capture all that lovely caramelization. For macaroni, I did use elbows but I selected the elbows with ridges and a bit of a twist because they seem to hold on to the sauce and meat better than smooth ones.

    DSC_9715 - Version 22012-10-30-American-Chop-Suey-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

When we have a stock of something like this in our refrigerator, we are most likely to pop some into a bowl and microwave individual portions. This is a great option if you have a bunch of different schedules to accomodate or some big appetites home for the holidays. A meal for some of us can be a between meal snack for others.

But, if you're feeding holiday guests and want a different look for this dish on day two, put a twist on tradition. Bake this pasta under a blanket of cheese and breadcrumbs and present it with a golden, cripsy top and a melty, cheesy layer.

  • For Sunday Dog Jackson, Life Is Best with a Stick

    DSC_9902 - Version 32012-11-10Jackson-stick-schocolate lab-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Jackson is a very beautiful chocolate Lab who just loves his sticks. We spotted him proudly prancing down the Commonwealth Avenue Mall carrying a stick that might wear down a lesser dog.

    DSC_9907 - Version 22012-11-10Jackson-stick-schocolate lab-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

He did put it down for a quick hello and a good laugh at our silly Poppy who was jumping at his face saying, "Play pick-up sticks with me."

"Girl," he said, "you couldn't lift this stick if you grew to twice the normal Westie size!"

    DSC_9916 - Version 22012-11-10Jackson-stick-schocolate lab-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Then he hefted his log and gave it a few twirls and tosses to entertain the silly puppy kid and got all the people around him laughing along with him.

Hey Jackson, thanks for being a kind gent around our pesky pup. See you out playing pick-up sticks again soon!

  • Toasting a Sparkling December!

Long ago, we decided that we weren’t waiting for New Years Eve to raise a glass of sparkling wine and toast a happy ending and new beginning. So we’ve started each month with a bottle of bubbles since 2007!  And, we’ve been sharing our bubbly selections with BostonZest readers since New Years Eve 2009.

    6a00e54fc42bb88834017d3c67a7f8970c-800wi

That means we have amassed quite a collection of wine recommendations. They are all available any time you want them from the “Sparkling Wine & More” tab at the top of each page.

With a month of gift buying, parties, and holidays in front of us, we’ll say “Happy New Month,” sip a glass of Nino Franco Rustico Prosecco, and link you to a few bottles you might add to your holiday shopping list.

    A Case of Sparkle

Ordering a case of a good, inexpensive, sparkling wine can be a great idea this time of year. Many shops will give you a case discount. If the store does not promote it, ask. You can also call ahead and have the wine merchant bring in the extra case of the wine you want.

    6a00e54fc42bb88834016761614856970b-800wi

We can suggest Dibon Cava, Gloria Ferrer Blanc de Noirs, or the Nino Franco Rustico Prosecco we’re opening this month.

Pre-wrap a few bottles and you will be prepared for hostess gifts, thank you gifts, client gifts, or something special to hand out with a holiday cash tip.

    Gift Wines For Wine Lovers

For someone who loves wine and would like to try something that will expand their wine life list or add a new category of taste to their holdiay, we would splurge on a “Grower Champagne.”

Central Bottle in Central Square Cambridge always seems to have a supply of these special bottles on hand. We recommend both the Champagne Chartogne-Taillet and Pierre Peters shown from ledgendary importer and wine educator Terry TheiseHis annual catalogs are available online and provide a champagne education.

    Pink for Romance!

Wrap up a romantic evening with the gift of a pink sparkler. It can be a value priced Louis Bouillot Rosé cremant. Or a splurge with a bottle of Delamotte Brut Rose from the maker of Salon Champagne.

Other pinks that tickle our fancy are Argyle Brut Rosé from Oregon, 3B Sparkling Rosé from Portuguese winemaker Filipa Pato, and for the utlimate fun evening try opening a bottle of Puro Rosé! (We had to make a video to show you how to open this one.)

Please add to our list by telling us about your favorite sparkling wine for the holidays. You can add a comment at the bottom of this post, sent it to @bostonzest on twitter or send us an email.
