Good News About Almonds!

We love to share good news about things we love, and we love almonds! NPR's Food blog, the Salt posted this research report on almonds.

If Almonds Bring You Joy, Enjoy More For Fewer Calories, saying that almonds may have 20% fewer calories than previously reported.

We're fussy about our almonds and prefer these freshly roasted, soft shell lovelies we buy from Fastachi at their shop in Watertown or at one of the farmers' markets they attend.

Almonds make the perfect pocket food. Put a few in a small container and pop that into your pocket or bag to stave off hunger and save you from less nutritious snacks. And, shelling each as you eat it will slow down your pace and let you feel fuller sooner.

Txakolina Extends Summer Fun

We discovered Txakolinas a few years ago and really enjoy these light, bright Basque wines. They're a perfect match for the type of foods you crave on a warm summer night. This particular one is Txakoli Ameztoi. It's one of those rare wines that actually has the flavor of fresh, green grapes. It might also remind you of a green apple– dry, crisp, refreshing, and thirst quenching.

Here's a link to a New York Times article, by Eric Asimov, on Txakolinas including this one. And he gives this note on pronunciation, "In Basque it is mostly rendered as Txakolina (pronounced chock-oh-LEE-nah), but almost as often it shows up as Txakoli (CHOCK-oh-lee)."

Only 10.5% alcohol makes them easy to enjoy.

By the way, we love to explore the food of a region with a wine. Over the years we've built a pretty good cookbook collection. One of our key reference books for Spanish food is 1008 Recipes by Simone and Inés Ortega. It's sort of the Joy of Cooking of Spain.

Txakolina Extends Summer Fun

Sunday Dog, Rocky Is Show-Dog-Cute!

Rocky is not only show-dog-cute, but also a natural when it comes to striking a pose! At only a year-and-a-half old, this handsome Norwich Terrier just loves the camera. Can’t you just image this face peering back at you from the pages of a canine calendar?

But before you get the wrong idea, it’s important to know that Rocky is much more than just a pretty face. This spunky little guy is as bright as they come. His talents go far beyond the usual “sit” and “down” mastered by most dogs, to “roll over” and “high five” on command!

Then, there’s the friendly, inquisitive side of this extraordinary character. When he first arrived in Boston last New Year’s Eve, Rocky admitted that he had no idea how much he was going to like living in the city and making new friends! Our Poppy found him irresistible as the two compared ears!

We’re told that Rocky really likes two female Jack Russell Terriers (there seems to be a pattern here) that live in his building and he loves to play with them!

In his spare time, Rocky enjoys mixing it up with his favorite Hedgehog toy, gnawing on a good piece of rawhide, and getting to sleep with his person in the big bed. What a life! What a dog!

Sunday Dog, Rocky Is Show-Dog-Cute!

Those Yummy Peppers Are Back…

Last year, we told you all about the Yummy Yellow peppers we found at the Atlas Farm stand at the Copley Square Farmers' Market. Yes, they are really called Yummy.

They're back and we recommend you pick some up and have them on hand to make a quick and delicious supper.

We sliced them, sauted them with some onion, and cracked a few eggs into the mix for a meal.
