It's fall, garden clean-up time! And, getting out into the yard more will mean getting more out of your yard.
Next, comes figuring out how to get rid of all the leaves and yard waste. It's easy, at least in Boston. The city promises to scoop it up on your recycling day, as long as you follow some simple guidelines.
And, the other bonus? Your yard waste will be used to help all the community gardens thrive.
The City of Boston lists:
Fall 2012 Leaf and Yard Waste Collection Dates:
Monday, October 15th through Friday, November 30th
The bread itself has a fine texture and is filled with Swiss and Blue cheeses. It's delicious on it's own and if you are going to grill it, you should make sure the filling lives up to that standard.
To keep the quality outstanding, we grated a light coating of an aged cheddar onto both slices of the sandwich then thinly sliced some of Stillman's Farm, Cherokee purple heirloom tomatoes and piled those on each piece of bread. Finally, we added some shreds of Jamón Serrano to each pile.
To gild our masterpiece, we melted the fat from the jamon and added some butter before we began grilling the sandwiches in a hot skillet. Porky flavor carressed the bread inside and out.
Shredding the ham made sure we would get a bit in each bite. Sometimes when we've left thinly sliced meat whole, the slice has pulled out of all that gooey, grilled, goodness in the first bite. The shredding process also left the stripes of fat that inspired us to melt them with the butter.
The first bite put us in celebration mode so we cracked open a split of champagne to enjoy with our toasties! It seemed to fit with Pain D'Avignon's heritage!

With today’s smart phones and tablets, you have to guess what the photographer is shooting. Is this woman taking a photo of her and her friend or the fall foliage in the Boston Public Garden?
Thanks to everyone who hops over to Amazon from here to do their shopping. We appreciate your support. It doesn’t cost you any more but they put a few coins in our tip jar.

Anytime you're at South End Formaggio, remember to check the offerings in the charcuterie case. They have a very nice regular selection. In addition, you often find something you've never tried like this Surryano Ham From Virginia. It's made from peanut-fed berkshire pork.
We bought a bit of this and a bit of Jamón Serrano so we could compare the two. They are both tasty bits of pork. The Virginia offering is smoky and rich with a creamy fat layer and nice marbling. The Spanish Jamon was cleaner with more pure pork flavor. But, we liked both and would buy either of them anytime a lovely looking leg is on offer.

Last week was the first time we made it to the City Hall Farmers' Market this year. Had we known that Pain D'Avignon Bakery from Hyannis was there every Monday, we would have scheduled more visits during the summer.
But, the market is open until Thanksgiving week, so we have another month of decisions about which of their truly great breads we'll try next.
This week we had a ginger scone, a blueberry scone, a blueberry muffin, oatmeal cookies, a cheese bread, and a baguette. The Cheese Bread is a long time favorite that we've shared with readers in the past. We used it for an example in our post, Keep Bread Fresh by Cutting from the Middle.
They bring many more selections to the market than we have found offered in the retail outlets where we usually find their breads around the city. And, to help bread-a-holics like us try more varieties, they bring in mini loaves of some breads.
Later this week we'll tell you about what we made with our loaf of cheese bread when we returned from the market.
After meeting the very nice crew at the market, we plan to take a side trip to the Pain D'Avignon bakery and their Café-Boulangerie on our next trip to Cape Cod.

Whether your Sunday Dog (or cat) is traveling with you or staying with friends for the holidays, it’s time to make that reservation.
Pet sitter and boarding kennel schedules can fill up fast this time of year, so here are some tips to make sure your pal will have all the comforts of home no matter where the journey leads.
All Set to Go!
If you’re considering a boarding kennel, insist on seeing exactly where your pet will be kept and inspect the entire facility before choosing one.
Dog hotels offer rooms with walls and furniture rather than wire pens or kennels and can be quieter, calmer, and more like a home environment.
Pet sitters will come to your home each day, stay in your home, or keep your pet in their home. If you use a dog walker, start with him or her.
There are also a few people in every neighborhood who make a little extra income by taking care of pets. If you ask neighbors for recommendations, you may find a gem in your area.
Some dog breeders provide boarding services for dogs in their line. In the case of small scale breeders, your pet could have the run of their home except at bedtime.
If you’re planning to fly with a small dog or cat, you’ll want to reserve a place in the cabin. Airlines limit the number of companion animals on each plane.
Even informal agreements with family, friends, and other pet lovers for care while you travel should be arranged well in advance to ensure a visitor will fit with their holiday plans.
If you have a dog or cat with serious health issues who needs careful monitoring of a medical condition or is very frail, consider boarding them at a veterinary hospital with 24-hour medical staff on duty. Angell Animal Medical Center in Jamaica Plain offers this type of service.
Pull out your to-do list and move holiday planning to the top. Doing that now will feel like you’ve given a special gift to yourself when the time comes to travel.
