  • Brebis Pardou: One Sheepie Cheese

Ed and I both have a taste for Sheepie cheeses, so we both enjoyed a wedge of Brebis Pardou from the Pyrenees region of France that was recommended by a cheesemonger at South End Formaggio.

Ed was waiting outside the shop with our puppy Poppy. I loved my first taste so much that I had to share it with him and excused myself for a moment to bring him half of my sample slice. (The shop is smart enough to have a bench out there. Thanks!)

    IMG_0682 - Version 22014-05-04-brevis-pardou-sheep-milk-cheese-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Ed approved the purchase with a happy nod and we enjoyed this piece over the next week.

Here's how Formaggio describes this cheese:

    "Brebis Pardou
    Country of Origin: France
    Region: Pyrénées-Atlantiques
    City / Village: Laruns
    Type of Milk: Sheep
    Flavor Profile: Medium
Wine Pairings: White: Full-bodied & Dry
Wine Pairings 2: Red: Lean Old World

A farmhouse sheep's milk cheese from the Vallee D'Ossau Iraty using the milk of the traditional breed of sheep: brebis béarnaise. Brebis Pardou has a wonderful smooth and supple texture with flavors and aromas of herbs, nuts, and sweet cream."

  • Toasting June with Raventos i Blanc de Nit

Raventos i Blanc de Nit is one of our finds from Perry’s in Provincetown. We were happy to see more of this wonderful Spanish sparkler in the cooler on a recent visit.

    PC2_2951 - Version 22014-04-23raventos i blanc sparkling wine© 2011 Penny Cherubino

This wine comes from a Spanish estate that has been owned by the same family of winegrowers since 1497. And, they have been making sparkling wine by the traditional method since 1872.

     PC2_2938 - Version 22014-04-23raventos i blanc sparkling wine© 2011 Penny Cherubino

We enjoyed one bottle on a rainy afternoon by the sea. And, we are welcoming June, the month that brings us summer, with another.

    PC2_2918 - Version 22014-04-23raventos i blanc sparkling wine© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Our scribbled notes from our last two tastings contain words like smooth, round, balanced, and sophisticated. We both found ourselves enjoying the lingering bouquet and the rose gold color in our glasses.

Thanks to winter markets, wholesale customers, farm stands, and CSA's, we are seeing more ready to eat produce at early spring farmers' market. Here are some of what we saw at the Copley Farmers' Market during the past two weeks.

Here's what we bought on opening day at Copley this year. On Friday, we arrived too late for tomatoes and cucumbers from Atlas Farm. They were sold out before we arrived. With early spring markets, it's good to arrive at opening if you're hoping for scare crops like those.

Starters, Annuals, and Herb Plants, too!

  • Memorial Day: Make a Summer Bucket List!

This holiday marks the unofficial start of summer and heralds the best month of the year* in Boston. It's the perfect day to make a Summer 2014 Bucket List of places you want to go and things you want to do in the warmer months.

    IMG_7391 - Version 22014-05-02-back-bay-boston-brownstone-flowers-garden-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

It could be something as simple as slowing down as you walk around the city to enjoy beautiful gardens and floral displays like this one.

    6a00e54fc42bb888340120a92d2760970b-800wi

Perhaps you want to take an art class or just get out and draw or paint.

    PC2_3076 - Version 22014-04-25provincetown, reflections,© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Or, you might want to make reservations to visit your favorite places.

Make your list, check it twice, and get out and enjoy summer in Boston.

    * By the way, for us, the best month of the year in Boston is June. Most of the students are gone, there are few conventions or events, and the tourists have not yet arrived in droves. It's a great time to stay in the city and enjoy it as if you were a vistor. That's the top item on our Summer Bucket List and we plan to check it off with a big smile.

  • Scotties Posing Pretty in Provincetown

An old friend once said that getting more than one dog to pose for the camera is like trying to keep Jell-O® on a shelf. True, for the most part, unless you run into this pair of Scottish Terriers who pose on request.

    IMG_7370 - Version 22014-04-26-scottie-scottish-terrier-pair-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

At first it seems like a normal two dog situation. One would look at me, the other was more interested in his paw.

    IMG_7372 - Version 22014-04-26-scottie-scottish-terrier-pair-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

But then their people said a magic word and they sat, side by side, and locked eyes on me and my camera.

  • The MFA Memorial Day Open House – Free Admission May 26, 2014

This is the weekend to kick off summer in Boston and the Museum of Fine Arts invites you to include a free visit with plenty of color and entertaiment to the festivities.

    MFA Memorial day openhouse

Here are a few of the details the MFA provided:

From 10 am to 4:45 pm, visitors are invited to celebrate a “Season of Color in the Americas” with a fun-filled day of vibrant music and colorful activities. In honor of the holiday, a 55-piece US Coast Guard Band will perform a selection of patriotic songs and American Standards at the Museum’s historic Huntington Avenue entrance on Bank of America Plaza. Inside, families can feel the rhythm of Latin American culture through Cha-Cha dance workshops and dance along (or learn how to dance) to Latin American beats with Edwin Pabon y Su Orquesta and Riobamba of Pajaritos. • Clarendon Street Food Truck Move

The food truck parking spot that was located on Clarendon Street (between Newbury and Boylston) has shifted across Boylston Street next to Trinity Church.

    PC2_3416 - Version 22014-05-07-beach provincetown-fog© 2011 Penny Cherubino

This is probably a good move since it's closer to Copley Square's benches, lawns, and fountain for dining spots. We highly recommend this general area for visitors who would like to try a few trucks. There are three parking spaces surrounding Copley Square with up to five trucks at busy times.

Here is the city's food truck link.

In addition to this spot, you'll also find as many as three trucks right behind the Copley Fairmont Hotel on Trinity Place and one truck on the Boylston Street side of the Boston Public Library near the MBTA station.

We highly recommend a visit to Steve Leibowitz's Hub Food Truck site for the most complete and up-to-date coverage of the area food truck scene.

Here's a link to our Food Truck/Street Food coverage.

  • The Lobster Pot in Provincetown… For Take Out Too!

The Lobster Pot in Provincetown is a familar place to most people who visit Provincetown. You may think of it as a spot to eat, in the center of town, with waterfront dining rooms. You may not realize that you can also stop by to order live lobsters or have them prepare a ready-to-eat take out order of anything on the menu.

    PC2_2997 - Version 42014-04-24provincetown, lobster, steamers, bread, salad,© 2011 Penny Cherubino

We always have at least one lobster dinner during our Ptown vacations. One day this spring, we had the Lobster Pot cook a couple of big lobsters, some steamers, and at the suggestion of a very nice staff person we added bread and salad. We feasted back at the apartment and had plenty of lobster left over for lobster rolls the next day.

    6a00e54fc42bb88834019102a3db52970c-800wi

In summer, you can place your order at the raw bar just inside the front door. If it's one of the slower times of year, like it was when we visited, you just go back to the service bar and the bartender will take care of you.

    PC2_3341 - Version 22014-04-29-lobster-pot-provincetown-© 2011 Penny Cherubino

Stop by on your first stroll through town and pick up a paper copy of the menu or download a PDF copy here.

That way, you'll be ready to call in or visit with an order when you want to have a Lobster Pot feast at your Provincetown home base or on the beach if that's your pleasure.
